Lab “Root partition is full”

easy ~15 min stage 1 of the “Storage” track

Open the lab

In a Linux terminal

bash
df -h # disk space in powers of 1024: 932G df -H # the same in powers of 1000: 1.0T lsblk -b # disk sizes in bytes numfmt --to=iec 1000000000000 # 932G

Keep in mindA 1 TB disk shows up as about 931 GiB: the maker counts in thousands, df -h and lsblk in 1024s.

GB and GiB

Disks are labelled in decimal units: 1 TB = 10¹² bytes. Linux and Windows divide by 1024 and show the same disk as 931 GiB; Windows still calls it “GB”. df -h and ls -lh write powers of 1024 as a letter without B: 932G.

FAQ

How many gigabytes are in a terabyte?

1000 GB in decimal units, 1024 GiB in a TiB. A 1 TB disk holds 931 GiB.

Why does a 100 Mbit/s link download at only 11 MB/s?

100 Mbit/s is 12.5 MB/s. Protocol headers take 5–10 %, and programs show MiB/s.

How much space does a 32 GB flash drive really have?

32·10⁹ bytes, which is 29.8 GiB: that is what Windows and df -h show. The file system takes a little more.
