Step 6 of 8 · on a machine · 4 min

A check by a new shell

The export from the previous step is gone after the next login. Making the setting last is up to you, with no ready commands.

The exercise check starts a new shell with a clean environment, as if you had just logged in to the machine, and it does not see an export made in this terminal. Mind the quotes: the line in the file must keep $HOME and $PATH themselves, so a new shell fills in their values when it starts.

Exercise · do it

Add ~/tools to PATH for good

Make every new shell find the lab-status command by its short name, while ls, cp and the other commands work as before.
