The system did not boot: emergency mode

Step 5 of 7 · on a machine · 4 min

A disk that is not there

The same technique when there is nothing to correct in the line: the disk is missing, and the line will be needed again.

The archive disk has been taken away for checks, but its line stayed in fstab. Without the disk the machine will stop in emergency mode, only it waits for the device first: on this machine the line waits 15 seconds instead of a minute and a half, as set by the x-systemd.device-timeout=15s option. You can fix it from the emergency shell or in advance, before a reboot.

Exercise · do it

Boot the machine without the disk

The archive disk has been taken away for checks and will be back in a week, but its /srv/archive line is still in /etc/fstab. Make the machine boot to the normal mode without the disk, and keep the line so that nobody has to write it again when the disk is back. Check it with a reboot: sudo reboot.
