Summary

  • About a hundred processes run without you: systemd, services, and other accounts started them. Every process has its own PID and an owner.
  • pgrep -l finds processes by name, and ps -C name -o pid, ppid, user, args prints their rows with the columns you need.
  • PPID is the parent's number: it leads you to the process that started another one.
  • Under STAT, R means running, S sleeping, T stopped. top shows who keeps the CPU busy right now.
  • At the start of the lesson one process slowed the site down: top put indexer, run by www-data, at the top with nearly all of the CPU.
