Background jobs and the terminal

Not running Starting usually ~20 s

Step 6 of 7 · on a machine · 4 min

The export took over the terminal

The export was started the usual way, and it has taken over the terminal for an hour. Free the terminal without starting the export over: you choose the commands.

Interrupting the export and starting it again with & is no way out: it would begin from the first step, and the work done so far would be lost. A command already running in the foreground can be moved to the background without a restart.

Exercise · do it

Get your terminal back

In ~/jobs-lab, start the export with ./export.sh: it runs for about an hour and takes over the terminal. Free the terminal without interrupting the export or starting it again.
