Summary

  • kill sends a signal. With no option it is TERM, a request to exit that gives the program time to save its work.
  • kill -9 (KILL) cuts a process off at once, STOP pauses it, and CONT continues it.
  • Signals to someone else's process go through sudo; take the number right before the signal and check the result in ps.
  • A zombie (Z) has already exited and waits for its parent to collect the exit status: signals do not help it.
  • At the start of the lesson export a managed to append saved: a plain kill asked it to exit, while kill -9 cut export b off mid-sentence.
