Why did student fail to log in to the shop database, even though it exists?

student:~$ psql -d shop -c 'SELECT 1'
psql: error: connection to server on socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432" failed: FATAL: role "student" does not exist

The server is not listening on the socket.
There is no shop database on this server.
student is not in the postgres group.
