Root partition is full

A service stopped saving data: the disk is full. Find what took the space and free it without touching the service's data.

Situation

An application service keeps its data in /var/lib/app and writes its log to /var/log/app. Since this morning it cannot save a single record and reports No space left on device.

Task

Give the service room to write:

  1. the filesystem holding /var/lib/app must have at least 1 GB free;
  2. the service data in /var/lib/app is needed: do not delete or change it.

The tools you need are already installed. There's no internet on this machine.

Lab · on your own

No commands are given in this lab: type them in the terminal yourself. Goals are checked on the machine after every command.

Goals

0 of 2
  • At least 1 GB is free on the filesystem of /var/lib/app — not done yet
  • The service data in /var/lib/app is in place and unchanged — not done yet
