- A directory without its volume accepts files, and a mounted volume covers them;
findmnt --mountpointandfindmnt --targetshow what stands behind a directory. - An fstab line is matched against the volume with
blkid, the table is checked withfindmnt --verify, and the result with a mount and the volume's files. - A healthy volume with a wrong reference is neither formatted nor treated with
fsck: you fix the table. - The night report at the start of the lesson never went anywhere: it sat in the directory on the root filesystem, and the mounted volume covered it.
