Summary

  • A new disk without a filesystem shows up in lsblk but not in df: df shows only what is mounted.
  • The order of preparation: a partition table with mklabel gpt, a partition with mkpart, a labelled filesystem with mkfs.ext4 -L.
  • A partition goes into fstab by UUID with nofail, and you check the entry with umount and mount -a.
  • On a partitioned disk a new partition is added with mkpart in the free space: mklabel would drop the old partitions from the table.
  • At the start of the lesson mount answered wrong fs type because the new disk had neither partitions nor a filesystem.
