Summary

  • uptime prints three averages — over 1, 5 and 15 minutes — of the number of processes in R and D; compare them with nproc.
  • R — the process runs or waits for the CPU: id is near zero, and r grows in vmstat.
  • D — the process waits for a disk or a filesystem; signals, even SIGKILL, reach it only after the wait.
  • nice and renice change the CPU share of processes in one service or session; only root can lower nice.
  • The load average above three from the alarm at the start of the lesson came from three tar processes stuck in D on the frozen /srv/backup — while the CPU was free.
