The mail has the same trouble, only the processes belong to root: /proc/<PID>/fd, strace and lsof will all need sudo.
Free the mail queue
Since last night the lab-mailer service has not sent a single message from /var/lib/mailer/queue, although the mailer process is alive. Find out what it is waiting for and get the sending done without restarting mailer: this same process must send the messages.
