Summary

  • chmod with symbols changes one place in the permission string (u+x); with a number, the whole mode (640).
  • chown changes a file's owner and group, and the permissions stay as they were.
  • You fix the part of the path where access breaks — a file or a directory — and check with the same operation as the user who needs access.
  • report.sh at the start of the lesson would not run by its path: it had no x, while bash report.sh just read the file, and r was enough.
