export VAR=value for the current session + children
VAR=value cmd for one command only
source ~/.bashrc reload without a new login
permanent: ~/.bashrc (terminal) · ~/.profile (login/SSH) · /etc/environment (system-wide)
systemd: Environment= / EnvironmentFile= ; cron: inside the script
