inode

Storage and file systems

A filesystem structure containing object metadata; its name is stored separately in a directory entry.

An inode stores file metadata: type, permissions, owner, sizes, timestamps, and pointers to data blocks. The file name is stored in a directory and points to the inode. Out of inodes → "No space left" even with free gigabytes.
