Summary

  • An address is assigned to an interface; ip -brief address shows the interface, its state and its addresses.
  • The prefix defines the subnet: neighbours are addresses with the same network number, and another subnet needs a route.
  • 127.0.0.1 is the machine itself; the address is no use to another host.
  • ping confirms an exchange with a host; it does not check the programs running on it.
  • At the start of the lesson ping printed Network is unreachable at once: the client was in the 192.0.3.0/24 subnet and the server in 192.0.2.0/24.
