An installation with an error

What you will learn

  • Finish an installation that stopped at a dependency.
  • Upgrade a package and decide what to do with your own settings edit.
  • Choose between removing with settings kept and removing completely.

You were sent the reporting program's archive: "Install it on the server, it is in /srv/package-lab." Install the package from the archive and run the program.

Exercise · look

Install the archive

You are in /srv/package-lab. Install the package from the lab-pkg-report_1.0-1_all.deb archive and run the program.

First, predict

The archive requires lab-pkg-data, which the system does not have. What will sudo dpkg -i do?

Now start the exercise, run the command and compare your prediction with the output.

Why did the program appear in /usr/bin but cannot work?

  • The archive is intact: dpkg unpacked it without errors. The error in the output is about the dependency: Package lab-pkg-data is not installed.

  • The program is visible right now: the shell found and ran it. What is missing are the files it reads.

  • The program did run: cat printed its errors. It lacks files; permissions have nothing to do with it.

dpkg unpacked lab-pkg-report and put the installation on hold: lab-pkg-data is not on the system.
