Summary

  • dpkg installs a package in two stages, unpacking and configuring; without its dependency the package stays unpacked.
  • dpkg --configure finishes the installation once the dependency is in place; apt install looks for dependencies in repositories.
  • During an upgrade dpkg asks about a conffile only if both you and the package changed it.
  • remove keeps the settings and a config-files record, purge deletes them too.
  • At the start of the lesson the program appeared but could not work: dpkg unpacked it and stopped at the dependency.
